What to ask about deck footings after teardown

A removed deck can leave posts and concrete at ground level. Decide whether those bases belong in the job before work begins.

Decide what finish you need

After the deck boards and frame are gone, posts and concrete may remain at or below the soil line. Ask whether you want each footing extracted, reduced to a specified depth, or left in place. The choice depends on what you plan to build or plant next. Do not assume a general deck teardown includes excavation.

Photograph every base

Take a wide yard photo and close views of each visible post, pier block, or concrete base. Count the locations you can see and note any bases next to the house, a fence, irrigation, or a tree. Hidden conditions may change the plan after work starts.

Questions for the scope discussion

Keep people clear of exposed holes and protruding hardware. If you suspect a buried utility, have the appropriate professional locate it before anyone digs.
